college. Learning this led me towards the Games Design course at which I began to focus
more upon the environment design and concept, also learning Photoshop at a more
advanced level. Environment design and concept in Photoshop then took over as my main
focus and interest.
What I took from my college course Media Studies Moving Image Production was the
knowledge of composition, lighting, colour and atmosphere which to me are the most
important aspects of a good game environment. This is therefore what I focus on in my
environment concepts. Something which helps me is my interest in architecture
documentaries and programs and building design.
When I start a new concept, whether this is an idea from myself or one someone has
given me, I first start off thinking about the composition and colours I want to use. I usually
like to do some thumbnail sketches using block colours before start the main piece to get a
good idea of where I am going with it. The amount of time spent on each concept piece
depends on what is to be used for. If it is to get a general feel of the atmosphere of an
environment I will not spend so long on it as the details will sometimes not be so important.
However when a concept piece demands more detail to it I am quite willing and capable of
adding more. I get my strengths from a good sense of team work. I can work from art
direction as well as from my own ideas and I can pull together with a team to work on one
art vision.
